Earth Isn’t Fine Tuned

People who claim that Earth was designed by a deity just for the benefit of humans are looking at that concept the wrong way around.

Roughly 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water. The Earth is surrounded by the vacuum of space.

Humans can only live naturally on 30% of the planet. Without specialized equipment, humans cannot live in the ocean, humans cannot live in space.

In addition, Earth has earthquakes, wildfires, tsunamis, floods, landslides, volcanoes, and climate changes. All of these can kill humans. Sometimes it seems the planet is out to get us.

People who don’t understand evolution, or science in general, think that all the conditions favorable to life on Earth conspired to produce humans. They don’t appreciate that those conditions came first, before there were humans, because humans evolved and adapted to the conditions that already existed. The same conditions that allow human life also allow other forms of life, germs and viruses as well as plants and animals. We all benefit.

Because humans are greedy and selfish, there’s a good chance that in polluting our planet, and because of our terrible stewardship, we risk bringing about the extinction of our species, and possibly all others as well, if we don’t kill everything off through war first.
